What is a Recall?
Recall is the power of the voters, provided by the California State Constitution, to remove elected officials before their terms expire. It has been part of our government system since 1911 and has been used since then as one way for voters to express their dissatisfaction with elected representatives.
For information on how to recall local officeholders, please carefully review the Secretary of State's Recall Procedure Guide (opens in new tab).

Recall Filing and Costs
The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is the filing officer for recalls of elected officers of a county, school district, community college district, or special district as well as elected judges of the Superior Court.
For recalls of city officeholders, contact the City Clerk of that city.
The costs of a recall election are paid by the jurisdiction the elected official being recalled represents, regardless of the election's result.
