(Redwood City, CA) Today, Chief Elections Officer, Mark Church announced, “In the spirit of promoting open and transparent elections, the San Mateo County Registration and Elections Division will provide voting tabulation terminals to the Evan Low and Joe Simitian campaigns to view the digital copies of ballots tallied in the 16th Congressional District race”.

Two voting tabulation terminals are available for viewing by the campaigns beginning Wednesday, March 27, 2024 through Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elections Central, located at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo. The public may observe the process by calling 650.312.5222 or emailing Registrar@smcacre.gov to make an appointment. Space is limited and appointments are required.

As background information, California law requires all ballots cast to be printed on paper. Paper ballots are then scanned, and a digital copy is maintained in the voting system for ballot custody and auditing purposes. “No confidential voter information is accessible on the ballot or through the terminals”, added Church.

Semi-Official Elections Results Update

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division continues to process ballots for the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. As of 4 p.m. on March 26, San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer Mark Church released the Semi-Official Results showing a total of 174,001 ballots counted out of 435,482 registered voters for a voter turnout of 39.96%. The Semi-Official Elections Results are posted on the Elections website at this link.

The contest for a run-off spot on the November ballot against Sam Liccardo in the 16th Congressional District race has come down to a two-vote difference districtwide between Evan Low receiving 30,232 votes and Joe Simitian receiving 30,234 as of 4:29 p.m. on March 26, 2024. The 16th Congressional District encompasses both San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties and the Districtwide Results may be found at this link on the Secretary of State’s website.

As of today, in San Mateo County, of all ballots received, 525 are challenged ballots that may be cured by April 2, 2024. A ballot is challenged when a Vote by Mail ballot does not meet certain requirements as required by law.
